Hello from Southwark Private Renters’ Support Project!
Our October newsletter reports on our recent Private Renters Conference, shares news of legal advice services, and updates you on Aylesham Community Action’s campaign for affordable housing in Peckham.
Private Renters Conference 2025
Last month, we held our annual Private Renters Conference in Southwark, bringing together statutory and voluntary sector professionals to discuss renters’ experiences, upcoming reforms, and the future of the sector at both local and national levels.
We were particularly interested to hear from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) about the implementation and enforcement of the Renters’ Rights Bill – which will be having its next (and hopefully final!) debate on 14 October before receiving Royal Assent later this year.
Read our report on the Private Renters Conference to find out more.
LSBU Legal Advice Clinic
London South Bank University’s Legal Advice Clinic has reopened this month, offering free drop-in advice from LSBU law students working under the supervision of practising solicitors.
If you have a housing issue that you need legal advice on, you can attend the drop-in for an initial assessment to get a follow-up appointment for specialist advice.
The clinic is located at the Clarence Centre for Enterprise and Innovation, 126 London Road, SE1 0AE.
Aylesham Community Action Protest
Aylesham Community Action have achieved a historic victory in their fight for affordable housing in Peckham, persuading Southwark Council to block Berkeley Homes’ proposals for redevelopment of the Aylesham Centre with only 12% “affordable” homes.
But Berkeley Homes now hopes to overturn the Council’s decision at an upcoming inquiry. Join Aylesham Community action on Tuesday 28 October at the Southwark Council offices to protest and show that the local community demands equitable redevelopment, not luxury flats for second home owners during a housing crisis!
Thanks for reading our October 2025 newsletter!
