On 27th June, twenty people from local voluntary and community sector organizations and Southwark Council met to discuss the issues facing private tenants in Southwark.

The Southwark Private Renters’ Conference was supported by Southwark Council which is funding Southwark Private Renters Support Project.

Presentations on licensing were given by Roz Spencer from Safer Renting, on her recent report ‘Licensing Private Rented Homes – Insights and Experiences from 5 London Boroughs‘ and by Emma Trott on the current state of private property licensing in Southwark.  

The attendees then took part in discussions providing feedback and ideas on 2 key questions; ‘How can the Council, voluntary sector, and private renters work together to make licensing private lettings work?‘ and ‘What are the emerging issues in the private rented sector and what support works best?‘. 

The event was organized by Citizens Advice Southwark which was commissioned to oversee Southwark Private Renters Support Project. 

To further support residents who are renting privately, a website with information, guidance and signposting help is available.
