Hello from Southwark Private Renters’ Support Project!

Our February newsletter invites you to our next Cost of Living Roadshow, encourages you to join us in the fight for rent controls, and shares news from local campaigning for affordable housing in the Old Kent Road area!

Cost of Living Roadshow

The next Cost of Living Roadshow will be at Silverlock TRA Hall, Warndon Street, London SE16 2SB on Wednesday 25 February, 10am-1pm.

You can get support from Southwark Council’s Private Rented Sector Tenancy Relations Service on issues including:

  • Eviction or threat of eviction
  • Harassment from your landlord
  • Homeless applications and related issues.

You can also access other cost of living related services including:

  • Southwark Council Financial Inclusion: For help if you’re struggling to pay your rent and need a Discretionary Housing Payment (DHP)
  • Southwark Council Allocations: For help with your council housing bidding account.
  • Department for Work and Pensions (DWP): For help if you’re having issues with your benefits.

You don’t need to book an appointment, just turn up on the day to speak with these, and other services that can help you deal with the cost of living.

Winning the fight for rent controls!

Homes for Us is hosting a grassroots housing gathering on Sunday 8 March, 10.30am-4.30pm at Pelican House with people and organisations fighting for housing justice.

This event will be an opportunity to share learning and expertise from across the housing movement to win the fight for rent controls and ensure affordable hosing for all. We’ll be strategising on how to effectively campaign for this demand, which is crucial to securing a fairer private rented sector, ahead of the big national rent controls housing demonstration taking place in London this spring.

Save Old Kent Road!

SHAPE and Southwark Defend Council Housing are organising a number of actions to protest against the Old Kent Road Area Action Plan (AAP), which proposes major development of the area to build 20,000 new homes, of which only 5,000 will be social rented, and an unspecified number to be council homes.

Local campaigners are calling on those who want to see homes for people, not for profit, and a halt to overdevelopment to join them at their protest on Wednesday 28 March, outside the Southwark Council offices. You can also get more involved in the campaign and encourage others to joing – get in touch by emailing privaterenters@citizensadvicesouthwark.org.uk to find out more.
