Local organizations and Southwark Council meet at the Southwark Private Renter’s Conference.

On 4th October, over thirty people from local voluntary and community sector organizations, Southwark Council, and private renters met to discuss the issues facing private tenants in Southwark.

The Southwark Private Renters’ Conference was supported by Southwark Council which has pledged to allocate funding for the next three years towards providing support for private renters facing problems.

Councillor Dora Dixon-Fyle opened the conference by acknowledging the pressing need to deal with a variety of issues within the private rented sector, including disrepair and illegal eviction.

The attendees took part in round-table discussions providing feedback and ideas on how private renters could be better supported in the near future. The participants also discussed what campaigns should be undertaken to improve renting conditions in Southwark.

The event was organized by Citizens Advice Southwark which has led the project since March 2022. The project has delivered Know Your Housing Rights sessions and surveyed over two hundred private tenants in the borough.

To further support residents who are renting privately, a website with information, guidance and signposting help has been launched in September.
